Are there breed restrictions for mobile grooming?

Most mobile groomers work with a wide range of breeds, but size limits and breed-specific policies vary by provider.

If you've been searching for this, you probably have a dog that's been turned away before, or you’re worried they might be. You might have a Great Dane who’s gentle but weighs more than some of your furniture. Or you might have a reactive breed that other groomers have described as difficult. And that can be frustrating.

At Woofie’s, most dogs up to 80 pounds are OK for mobile grooming. In some cases, exceptions might need to be made based on breed, coat type, and temperament. No matter what, though, we’ll always tell you before you book.

Some mobile groomers won’t take giant breeds at all. Others decline certain brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds because of the respiratory risks associated with grooming stress. So it’s always worth asking before booking.

The reason size limits exist in mobile grooming isn't about the groomers being unwilling. It's a space issue. Mobile vans are tight spaces, and in the back, you have to fit a tub, table, and drying equipment in addition to the dog and the groomer themselves. A 60-pound golden retriever is already a big ask in a tight space like that. A 130-pound mastiff just might not fit at all.

Some breeds also have coats that require extra time. Thinking of the dense double coat on a Great Pyrenees or the corded coat of a Komondor here. Those require more time and specialized techniques.

If you happen to have a flat-faced breed like a bulldog, pug, or Boston terrier, you might run into issues as well. They’re not often restricted outright, but good groomers will note that they need special handling. These dogs can’t pant very well, which means they’re prone to overheating. So the grooming environment needs to be carefully climate-controlled to prevent respiratory distress.

Woofie's® of Lee's Summit-Kansas City South groomers are trained through Woofie's Academy—a 240-hour program covering safety, handling, and breed-specific care—and hold AKC S.A.F.E. certification. If your dog falls outside the standard 80-pound limit or has breed-specific needs, they'll tell you straight whether they can accommodate your pet and what adjustments they'd make.
