Pet Sitting or Boarding? How to Decide What's Best for Your Pet
Planning a trip is fun right up until somebody says, "What are we doing with the dog?"
Or the cat.
Or the dog, two cats, fish and the medication chart taped to the refrigerator.
Pet parents generally have two broad choices when they travel: bring the pet somewhere else, such as a boarding facility, or have a pet sitter care for them at home.
Neither is automatically better. The right answer depends on your pet's personality, routine and needs.
What Is In-Home Pet Sitting?
With in-home pet sitting, your pet stays in their own home while a caregiver comes in for scheduled visits, walks, feeding, play, medication when appropriate and other agreed-upon care.
Some families use several visits throughout the day. Others choose overnight care so a sitter is in the home during the evening and overnight hours.
The biggest advantage is obvious: your pet's environment does not change.
What Is Boarding?
Boarding means your pet stays somewhere outside the home while you travel. That might be a traditional kennel, veterinary facility, pet resort or another type of boarding setup.
Some pets love this. A social dog may treat boarding like camp and come home exhausted from all the activity.
Other pets find unfamiliar buildings, sounds, dogs and routines stressful.
Which Is Better for a Dog Who Loves Other Dogs?
A confident, social dog may be perfectly happy in a well-run boarding environment, especially if they enjoy group activity.
But "likes other dogs" is not the only question. Some very social dogs still sleep better at home, eat more reliably in their own kitchen and prefer their usual walking route.
Think about the whole experience, not just whether your dog likes to play.
Which Is Better for a Nervous Dog?
For dogs who are anxious in new places, reactive around unfamiliar animals or deeply attached to their routine, staying at home can be a major advantage.
Their bed smells right. Their food bowl is where it belongs. The neighbor's terrifying decorative goose is still exactly where it was yesterday.
Familiarity can be comforting.
What About Cats?
Cats are one of the strongest arguments for in-home care.
Many cats are deeply attached to territory and routine. Taking them out of the house may involve carriers, car rides and a completely unfamiliar environment.
For a cat who is happy at home, scheduled pet-sitting visits can allow feeding, litter care, medication, play and human attention without relocating the cat.
There are exceptions, of course. Every cat is an individual. We have met cats who would happily move into a stranger's suitcase if it appeared comfortable enough.
What If I Have Multiple Pets?
This is where in-home care can become especially appealing.
Transporting one dog may be easy. Transporting two dogs, three cats and a rabbit starts to look like a military operation.
Keeping everyone at home can preserve their normal routines and avoids splitting pets among different facilities.
Does Pet Sitting Mean Someone Is in My House All Day?
Not necessarily. Pet sitting can be built around scheduled visits of different lengths, depending on what your pet needs.
For pets who need more company overnight, an overnight service may be a better fit.
Woofie's of Columbia offers both in-home pet sitting and overnight pet sitting options, so care can be matched to the household rather than forcing every pet into the same schedule.
How Do I Decide?
Ask yourself a few questions:
- Does my pet eat normally in unfamiliar places?
- How do they react to other animals?
- Do they become stressed by car rides?
- Do they need medication or a detailed routine?
- Are they older or very young?
- Do I have several pets with different needs?
- Would my pet be happiest sleeping in their own bed?
- How much human company do they normally have?
If your dog loves a busy environment and adapts easily, boarding may be great. If your pet is a homebody, in-home care may feel much more natural.
Do Pet Sitters Do More Than Feed and Walk?
A good pet-sitting visit is not a drive-by food delivery.
Depending on the service, care can include fresh water, meals, walks or potty breaks, playtime, litter box cleaning, medication, bringing in mail, watering plants and updates so you know how things are going.
Those updates matter more than people realize. "Everything is good" is nice. A photo of your dog asleep upside down on the couch is better.
